According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Early Childhood Caries (ECC) “is the single most common chronic childhood disease.” ECC is 5 times more common than asthma and 20 times more common than diabetes. Tooth decay is prevalent in young children who drink a lot of sugary liquids, such as milk, formula, and fruit juice. ECC is considered an infectious disease that left untreated can destroy your child’s teeth. In fact, ECC can begin as early as the emergence of your child’s first tooth. ECC is just another reason why preventive and children’s dentistry is so important!

When should I start teaching my child about oral hygiene?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends beginning an oral hygiene routine at the appearance of the first tooth. Flossing should begin as soon as your child has two teeth next to each other. It’s very important to use a minimal amount of fluoride toothpaste (a smear for children under the age of two and no more than a pea-sized dollop for children 2 to 5 years old). You should also use the right kind of toothbrush, one with very soft bristles that are specifically made for young children. If you have any questions or concern about creating a daily homecare routine for your child, call our Barnwell children’s dentistry practice at (803) 259-1124.

At what age do you start seeing children for dental visits?

At Still & Reece Dentistry, we start scheduling regular dental visits at the age of three. As general dentists, we are well-versed in taking care of all members of your family, and we see a lot of children at our Barnwell office. We create a friendly, anxiety-free environment, giving your child a positive experience. No child should be afraid to visit the dentist! You can be assured we treat your child with the utmost care, and always confer with you, the parent, before proceeding with any treatments.

How can you protect my child’s teeth from cavities?

Our Barnwell dental providers offer two ways to protect your child’s teeth against decay. At our children’s dentistry practice, we can use dental sealants and fluoride supplements to promote healthy teeth and support oral hygiene efforts. A dental sealant is a thin biocompatible plastic applied to the back teeth (the molars) where decay is most likely to occur. Sealants protect teeth from getting food particles or bacteria caught in the tiny fissures and grooves in the molars. Fluoride supplements can be applied during your child’s regular checkup or tooth cleaning appointment. Gel or foam is put inside a mouth tray, which your child wears for just a few minutes. The extra protection will make it more difficult for decay to affect your child’s pearly whites. We recommend you check out the AAPD’s parent guide: The Surprising Truth about Cavities.
